The Big Five, and Much More

The Serengeti is among some of the most renowned national parks in the world and home to the legendary Big Five. The name ‘Big Five’ actually originated from the early days of the Serengeti when it was used as a hunting ground by foreigners. The hunters, however, skilled they were, always found it a challenging feat to kill lions, buffalos, elephants, leopards, and rhinos, thus naming them “The Big Five”.

Over the years, thousands have traveled to Tanzania in hopes of spotting its famous fives but, as experience has taught us, there is no certainty that you will see them all in a single day. Nevertheless, we assure you that will not make your trip any less spectacular.

The Big Five might be considered the star of the show, but the Serengeti still has a lot of acts to offer. Spreading out as far as the eye can see in all directions, the Serengeti hides some of the greatest natural treasures you will find.

Brimming with life, the Serengeti is home to one of the vastest ecosystems found around the world. Co-habiting together and perpetuating the cycle of life, these animals of all shapes, colors, and sizes share the Serengeti and all its resources. If you are lucky, you might get the chance to spot elephants, zebras, wildebeests, and gazelles, side by side at watering holes or by the riversides.

Indigenous Kopjes

To everyone who has seen The Lion King as a child, you must remember the huge Pride Rock, home of the lions. Well, Pride Rock is actually inspired by Kopjes, small outcrops of granite scattered around the plains. These granite formations, big or small, are a wonderful addition to the otherwise flat grassland as it is a preferred resting place for many animals and a remarkable geological occurrence.

Wild Chase

While it might not be a fitting sight for everyone, witnessing the wild chase between a cheetah and its prey is a lesson about survival and the return to the wild that you just might need. These events are most usually seen around calving season in the southern plains where wildebeests and other mammals stop to give birth. The young calves are easy prey for those four-legged hunters.

The Great Migration

Passing through Northern Tanzania and stretching further to other protected game reserves in Kenya, the Great Wildebeest Migration is the largest rallying of mammals ever seen in the world. There, every year, wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, and more travel together in a single column towards greener pastures, following the rainy season.
