Any photographer’s dream, whether an amateur or a professional, is the chance to tell stories and create memories through their art. In their quest for the magnificent and the soulful, photographers will witness few places around the world which can beat the rich history of the Serengeti and its unique and thriving wildlife.

Leighton Lum, wildlife photographer, who flew with us for one of his photoshoots had the opportunity to experience first hand the wonders of a Serengeti from the sky.

“We came to the Serengeti to see the Great Migration and it did not disappoint! More than 2 million animals on the move! It’s literally as far as the eye can see in every direction! Incredible!”

Stretching over nearly 15,000 km², the Serengeti offers some of the most stunning views known to mankind with plenty of opportunities for stunning photographs of both its epic landscapes and its highly diverse fauna.

Miracle Experience

Serengeti Vast Ecosystem

While the Serengeti National Park is home to a plethora of captivating wild animals and one of the vastest ecosystems in Africa, it is also one of the best places to witness and photograph the famous African sunrise. Rising above the clouds in a hot air balloon to see the dawn peak over the horizon and bathe the endless plains in deep reds, oranges, and yellows, silhouetting the acacia trees, is one of the most photography-worthy moments one will experience in their lifetime.

You will also get to enjoy the varying landscapes and views of the Serengeti from a bird’s perspective. This unique angle over regular safaris will give your photographs an edge and a vantage point rarely seen in common wildlife photography.

Photography in the Serengeti

Sunrise, Sunset and Wildlife

Once the sun is up, you most probably won’t have any problem capturing the herds of wildebeests crossing through the plains, however, other animals such as lions, cheetahs, and elephants might be harder to spot and require a more attentive eye.

Pride of lions is usually found in the tall grass of the savannah or lounging on some of the many indigenous kopjes scattered across the plains. Cheetahs, on the other hand, are excellent climbers and can sometimes be seen resting in the branches of low trees.

If you decide to visit the Serengeti during the calving season, around February, you might witness more active lions and cheetahs as they prey on young calves. This spectacle is an opportunity for epic photographs of predators in action.

Giraffes, elephants, and other herbivores are usually spotted in wide herds around the plains or close to watering holes. As your balloon glides over streams and rivers such as the Mara river, you will get the chance to see some hippos in the shallow water.

“The open plain where the land goes on and on...”

The Serengeti is a mystical land, rich in history, traditions and life. Named after the Maasai word ‘Siringet’, literally meaning ‘Endless plains’, the Serengeti is a gem like few others. Stretching on further than the eye can see, this magical place is a source of endless graces ready to be shared with the world.

Foreigners

Years before the first foreigners ever stepped foot on the African continent, the land was already a source of life for the local Maasai people who used the thousands of hectares of grassland to graze their herds of cattle. Now still, as we rush about our busy lives, this magical place remains to remind us of the beauty of nature and the importance of staying connected to our roots.

Established as a national park in 1951, the Serengeti has since grown famous as one of the seven wonders of the earth and home to the world’s greatest migration. Wildebeests, antelopes, buffalos, elephants, giraffes, lions, and many more coexist in these plains creating one of the most splendid ecosystems the world has to offer. Sometimes referred to as the ‘Wild Heart’ of Tanzania, the Serengeti reflects all the best things this country has to offer: strength, determination, and an unwavering soul.

Over the years, many from all over the world have come to see with their own eyes the wonders and beauty of the Serengeti and have fallen in love with its vibrant spirit. The history and significance of this thriving land is deeply rooted in the hearts and lives of the people of Tanzania.
